Currently millions of mobile devices run Nokia S60 on Symbian OS, 3rd Edition (3rd Edition feature pack 1 and 3rd Edition feature pack 2). The third edition brings new levels of flexibility and security, Firmware upgrade Over The Air (FOTA) capability, as well as a new open-source browser and web widgets. In addition, 3rd Edition feature pack 2 features HSDPA support, High Speed USB and support for hardware acceleration.

The latest release, Nokia S60 on Symbian OS, 5th Edition 5.0, brings new, advanced multimedia and internet experiences to devices with touch user interface and sensor technology. New image and video editors make it simple to capture and edit pictures and videos directly on the device before sharing them with others. Support for large, high resolution displays offers a better widescreen multimedia experience. In addition, the latest release also improves device performance with more efficient memory management.

A bright future with the Symbian Foundation

In 2009, Nokia S60 on Symbian OS, became part of the Symbian Foundation, a collaboration of mobile industry leaders made to create the most proven, open and complete mobile software platform in the world – and to make it available for free.

Since its announcement in June 2008, the Symbian Foundation has received endorsement from across the mobile industry, and beyond. With this strong backing from the industry, the Symbian OS is set to evolve and become even better.
