1. What are settings and why do I need them?

Many features on your phone, such as calling and text messaging, work automatically once you have inserted the SIM card and turned the power on.

However, some important messaging and browsing features require extra settings that allow your phone to communicate with your operator's network.

These settings are not always preinstalled, as they depend on your operator. If you purchased your phone from an operator, chances are good that the settings have already been included in your phone.

Otherwise, you can order and install these settings yourself. The process is simple, and Nokia can guide you through it step by step

2. How do I order the settings?

Just click the Order standard settings link on the Settings main page and fill in the information requested. The relevant settings for your phone model will be sent to your phone as one or more text messages. You'll be given instructions on how to save the message(s) and install the settings.

3. What is the difference between standard settings and advanced settings?

Standard settings include all the settings you need for multimedia messaging and/or browsing. Standard settings are relevant for the majority of new Nokia phone models.

Advanced settings are settings for newer or more complex features compatible with fewer phone models. These services currently include streaming, Push to talk, and email.

4. What phone features require settings?

Features requiring configuration from your operator require settings. The correct settings package for each feature is summarised in the table below.

Feature Settings Needed
Multimedia messaging Standard
Browsing the Internet or WAP sites, transferring data via GPRS Standard
Streaming Standard and advanced
Push-to-talk Standard and advanced
Email Standard and advanced

Please note that both your phone model and your service agreement with your operator must support the feature in question in order for it to work.

5. How do I know which features my phone supports?

If you're not sure which features are supported by your phone model, you can easily check online:

When looking at specifications, look for the abbreviation MMS (short for multimedia messaging). For browsing, look for the terms WAP, GPRS, EDGE, XHTML, or HTML. Push-to-talk is also known as PoC.

6. How do I know which features my service agreement supports?

If you're not sure, please contact your operator or service provider directly for information about the features supported in your service agreement and the prices for using them.

7. Which settings I should get for my phone?

To get the most use out of your phone, we recommend that you get all of the settings supported by your phone and your service agreement:

  • Get standard settings if your phone and service agreement support multimedia messaging (also called MMS) and/or browsing (look for the terms WAP, GPRS, HTML, or XHTML). Almost all current Nokia phone models support one or more of these.
  • Get streaming settings (from advanced settings) if your phone and service agreement support streaming of video and/or audio files.
  • Get Push to talk settings (from advanced settings) if your phone and service agreement support Push to talk over cellular or POC.
  • Get email settings (from advanced settings) if your phone and service agreement support email. Please note that you will need information about your existing email account to set up your phone's email settings, and that only selected service providers are covered (this means you probably cannot set up your corporate email account on your phone using this service).

Please contact your operator or service provider for information about the services supported in your service agreement and the prices for using them.

8. How much does it cost to have these settings sent to my phone?

Nokia provides the settings free of charge. However, once the settings are installed, the costs for messaging or browsing are charged by your network operator or service provider. Please contact them for information about pricing.

9. I tried to order settings, but my phone model is not listed. How can I get settings?

If your Nokia phone model is not listed, it may be because it does not support features requiring settings. You can check the features supported by your phone by reviewing the phone's product information: select your phone model

Alternately, It may be because your phone model is not available in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, or Asia-Pacific, which is the scope of this service.

10. I tried to order settings, but my country is not listed. How can I get settings?

If your country is not listed, please contact your operator or service provider directly for the settings.

11. I tried to order settings, but my operator or service provider is not listed. How can I get settings?

If your operator is not listed, please contact them directly for the settings.

12. My mobile phone isn't a Nokia phone. Can I still use this service to download settings?

This service is only compatible with Nokia phone models. For assistance with other manufacturers' phones, please contact your operator or service provider.

13. I'm not sure if these settings are already installed in my phone. What happens if I order a duplicate set?

Some Nokia phones have operator settings pre-installed in them. If you can send and receive multimedia messages and browse normally, your settings are in place and you don't need to use this service to update them. However, downloading the settings again through this service should not be a problem, either.

If you think that you have a feature's settings installed in your phone but the feature is still not working, please contact your operator to check that the feature is included in your service agreement and that it has been activated for you.

Some operators' settings work straight away, but we still advise you to contact your operator for information about pricing and services.

14. When I try to save the settings, I get a message asking me if I want to replace my existing settings. What should I do?

If you get this message, it means that your phone already has some settings installed. Assuming you have selected the correct operator and phone model when ordering the settings, it should be no problem to replace the existing settings.

15. I got the settings and saved them, but I still can't get multimedia messaging/browsing/streaming/Push to talk/ email to work. What should I do?

Contact your operator or service provider to check that the feature in question is included in your service agreement and that it has been activated for you

16. What is Setting Wizard?

Setting Wizard is a phone application, usually preinstalled, that you can use to order MMS, WAP/GPRS, and Internet settings from your operator or service provider. You can use the standard and advanced settings services provided on the Settings page to order these same settings, but Setting Wizard allows you to order and reconfigure your settings directly from your phone.

Please note that Setting Wizard does not allow you to manage advanced settings from your phone.

Setting Wizard is offered online in case you need to reinstall it or in case it was not included with your phone at purchase. To be directed to the correct Setting Wizard application, select your phone model from the drop-down menu at the right of the settings page.
